I made some phone calls on Friday... and here's what I found out.
To be officially recognized, we must meet the following criteria:
- 10 fee paying students minimum
- Faculty sponsor
- We must draw up a constitution; Other such paperwork
I don't think the student minimum will be a problem...we had what... 5 at the Feb meeting? And that's not including 2 guys I *KNOW* would have been there otherwise as well as lots of people on our Facebook Linux group.
I have contacted John Rose and left him voicemail to see if he is interested in sponsoring. He use to teach CSCE 311 (Operating Systems) and is a Solaris/Linux guy.
The person I talked to in student affairs also suggested I contacted a Michelle Dumas ... who is head of some labs in Gambrelle. She apparently does the Macintosh Users Group on campus which is already recognized by USC. She suggested Michelle could provide advise on things and help spread the word as there is, to some degree, crossover between Mac and Linux users.
awesome... now all we need is a constitution, which i assume can be the same thing as the LUG charter

I would assume so. Also still waiting to hear back from Professor Rose to see if he wants to sponsor us.
I know that Dr. Matthews is already somewhat involved. At least, he's been responsible for booking the Faculty Lounge for ColaLUG for the last several years.

Cool. If I don't hear from Rose I'll track him down. It seems the Univ. has given up regulating who uses the Faculty Lounge -- they say now if you have an approved reason to be there just post a sign on the door saying the time/day you're meeting and saying "Do not lock doors".
In any case, we'll want to force this stuff through soon. Without "official" status, subnetting inside their network (for, say, an install fest) will break some policies which some folks seem to take seriously.
How can we do this most quickly?
Professor Rose called me back and said he would for sure sponsor but wanted to make sure he didn't step on any toes as Dr. Matthews has been involved with the LUG for some time. He said either way -- between Matthews or himself we should have a sponsor.
Exxxxxxxxcellent.
Dr. Matthews and Dr. Rose have spoken about this, and Dr. Rose says he'll be our sponsor. (Yay, sponsor!)
I just got back from getting the paperwork; we'll have to setup a Constitution etc.
It's going to take careful wording for this to work. The following HAS to be in the constitution, verbatim:
Quote:Membership in <name> shall be limited to persons officially connected with the University of South Carolina - Columbia as faculty, staff, or students. Students enrolled in the spring semester under the above conditions who have pre-registered for the fall semester, as well as students enrolled in summer classes, are eligible for summer membership.
In other words, no non-student can be mentioned, considered, treated, or given the University provided "services" a student can. The person I spoke to in Student Gov't said groups that even add "honorary" or "alumni" clauses are shot down. So what this means is that ultimately ONLY students can use the net in the building. We can still all meet (students and non-students), but only students and those presenting to the LUG can use the University internet.
We're going to need to word this, as Dr. Rose suggested, as follows: The ColaLUG is a parent organization, and we're just a student chapter of that organization... similar to how IEEE is setup. We both think that should pass.
Now this presents some interesting twists for the Installfest, namely those dealing with internet.
- Only students can directly connect to the University network. This means non-students who need drivers etc must go through a student WITHOUT the student being a direct pipeline. E.g. student putting it on a NFS share / burning to CD.
- If we have any LAN gaming, it will have to be on our own LAN not connected to the University. How will networking that go? Can we take one port's output from a 4-port wired lan and wire that as input into another LAN?
- If a student at Whaley's Mill is close enough and has the "oomph" in their connection, we could rig up an ad-hoc wireless as Whaley's Mill is close enough for students on the left wing of the building, particularly those up high or directly facing the building.
Howdy,
I am a student of USC currently on the cola lug mail list. been meaning to goto a meeting but last semester i had class on thurs. and this semester ive been busy. few things
