The University of Virginia's John Welch partially qualified for the NCAA Championships in his first meet of the season with a throw of 234' 5" in the javelin. His performance is the top mark in the ACC this season and earned him first place at the Duke Invitational over the weekend. An All-American in 2001 with his seventh-place finish at NCAA's, Welch was the ACC champion in the javelin in 1999 before redshirting in 2000 and taking second place in that event at ACC's in 2001
