I forgot to change permissions off default when I created the forum. He's legit though. I set it to where you have to be registered now.

Currently Ubuntu 5.10, but I'm going to give Gentoo a shot this weekend. Wish me luck.

OK, finished the base install Friday night, Rebooted, came up just fine. I think the last time I tried it I had screwed up the grub.conf.but my cable was out so I had to wait until Sunday to start installing apps. First did the emerge --sync to update the portage and then emerge --update world which has been running for the last few hours. After that I'll probably do kde.

Awesome. A few super useful tools:
# emerge eix
# update-eix
Now as any user... eix (program in portage to search for)
You get instant results. Very handy/quick way to search portage. After every sync, you'll need to run update-eix.
# emerge ufed
# ufed
This program will show you nearly every big/important useful and explain what it does. A very handy way of making sure the features you want are there. Don't forget to run:
# emerge --update --deep --newuse world after changing USE flags so existing packages can be checked for proper support and recompiled if necessary.

Just installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my old Compaq. I plan on switching to it if I can get DSL here.

Lost my Linux virginity with the Knoppix LiveCD, then went to Mandriva (free version). I am just a desktop user who feels I need my money more than BGates does. I have now successfully (I think) installed OpenOffice 2.0.1 and got the Folding@Home client going again. Mandriva has some cool/funny screen savers and of course lots of software included. I may decide to make the donation and join the official Mandriva Club at some point but have not as yet done so. I imagine I will stick with this distro unless/until I encounter a need for something else.
