NOTICE: The instructions here are dated. Please read the FAQ for instructions on how to install Folding@Home. The FAQ is located HERE

If you are on Windows or Mac, there are multiple methods. Scroll down to review them all.

Now Folding@Home will run in the background of your computer... never bugging you and even taking up taskbar space. No matter who is logged in, it will run. Best of all, it will run much more efficiently this way. You will never even know it's there, as it runs under "Idle" priority.. only using what you don't. Literally no change in computer performance during intense things like gaming and video editing.

You can check your stats here:

Your name will show up on that page shortly after you complete your first work unit.

Windows | Graphical Install
Output: Medium
Difficulty for savvy users: May put you to sleep
Difficulty for clueless folks: May put you to sleep

Step 1) Download Graphical Client.
URL:
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup...ome502.EXE

Step 2) Install it

Step 3) When you run it, you will be prompted for two things... username and team number.
Username: (whatever you want, try to make it unique-ish)
Team number: 33100

Step 4) You're done. The red cog like image in your taskbar is the client. Check on it whenever you want.

Linux | Console Install
Output: Maximum
Difficulty for savvy users: May put you to sleep
Difficulty for clueless folks: May put you to sleep

Step 1) Download the client.
URL: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup...-Linux.exe

Step 2) Put the client in it's own folder.

Step 3) Using konsole (aka terminal or shell), navigate to the F@H directory.

Step 4) Issue this command as root:
./FAH502-Linux.exe -advmethods &

Step 5) For username, put in something uniqueish. For team number, put in 33100

Step 6) The "&" in the command you passed threw the program as a daemon (process). Close terminal and it will keep running.

Macintosh | Console Install
Output: Maximum
Difficulty for savvy users: Easy
Difficulty for clueless folks: Not bad

1) Download the client.
URL: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup...02-CLI.dmg
This will download a file called FAH5.02-CLI.dmg to your Desktop. Double click on that to mount FAH4-CLI, and copy "fah4" to your Desktop. You can now trash the disk image.

2) Open up a Terminal window and cd into the Desktop directory. To do this, type
cd Desktop/
Now, type
./fah502

4) You will be asked a series of questions to set up the configuration. The first of these will be what username you want to use. Put in something unique-ish. For team number, put in 33100

5) The application will download the scientific core (may take a few minutes) and then get to work. If you would like to hide the terminal, just choose Hide Terminal from the Terminal menu.

6) If you want, you can have Folding@home start up automatically each time you start Mac OS X. Just open the System Preferences, click Login (it's listed in the first row), click the Login Items tab that appears, click the Add button, select the Folding@home application, and click Open.

Macintosh | Graphical Install
Output: Maximum

- COMING SOON -
I installed the graphical version of the program, and it's been sitting on 0/400 (0% Complete) for the past four hours...the status bar is just sitting there saying, "Working..." :bang: :bang:

What are your cpu stats? Perhaps that's all the faster it can run. If this is the case, I would recommend running the console version, as the graphical version takes up more cpu power.

For Mac I've found Increase to be easiest to use, and if you have a dual-cpu machine like the G4/G5 towers it'll take advantage of both processors. Here's the description of Increase from the download page:

Quote:
InCrease
A program to assist in setting up and viewing CLI (Command Line Interface) client.
InCrease is the work of team member Kevin Bernhagen (calxalot) and uses programs such as mac_qd and his own foldingctl. It is a work in progress and any input would be appreciated and gladly accepted. Be sure to visit the forums to give your feedback, to get help with InCrease or folding in general, or to just to find out more about our team and its members.

I tried running Increase but I found that just running F@H in the terminal is much faster.

To each his own I suppose

I found it when I was looking at how to make F@H use both processors. I thought it was simple enough.

Just download another once and run both in terminal, that seems pretty simple 03-razz

Yep. Just make sure they are in diff. directories, and you give one console a Machine ID of 2 in advanced options.

Did you put in a username and team number? If not, it may be waiting for that info.

Folding@NCAAbbs is team 33100

Well, it's FINALLY working now. It's taken TWO DAYS to get 160/400 of ONE WORK UNIT completed. And it's definitely not my computer. I have a brand-spanking new Dell... 3.2GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, etc....this sucker can fly.

Console is much faster, especially because you can pass -advmethods off to core.

To get the most out of your Dell --> Console.

Why is it that I have saved the FAH file to my "C" drive yet when I try to set up the firewall and I browse, IT'S NOT THERE!!!

That's a new one on me. Open it if prompted after the download.

Step Four: Download and install FireDaemon Lite (free).
FireDaemon Lite:
http://downloads.hypernia.net/firedaemon/F...Lite-1_6-GA.exe

I can't find firedaemon lite. When I click these links, they do not work. I did a search online and can't find it. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
BTR

Use the GUI version for now -- I'll have to find a new free program for windows that allows you to run programs in the background.
