I grew up a Celtics fan for the first ten or so years of my life. That first decade or so, one of my biggest dreams was to see a game at the Garden someday.

In '88, I adopted the Hornets when they came to Charlotte, and cheered for them fervently -- even until the bitter end. My dad and I were there for the first ever game -- a 40 point-loss to Cleveland. We were there as the entire crowd gave the home team a standing ovation louder than just about any I've ever heard (for a forty-point loss, folks!). That was magical. I wished I could be there for the last game too, but somehow it wasn't right without my dad (like just about any sporting event nowadays).

I accepted the Hornets with all my heart, but I never lost my passion for the Celts. They were my dad's team for most of his life, and they were the first of any pro sports team that I ever gave a hoot about.

Well, as of last night, I am now a Celtics fan again.

And, I know that someone is looking down from above with an approving nod....

This has been a great year for sports in Boston. Did your dad like other Boston teams or just the Celts?

I'm a huge fan of the C's...That whole late-80's team in Boston is my all-time favorite (Bird, McHale, Ainge, Parish, etc). The Fleet Center doesn't have the playoff feel that the Garden did but you can tell those fans couldn't wait to get playoff hoops back into Boston.

I really jumped on the Pats bandwagon this year and with the Tech connection (Varitek and Nomar), I've been a Sox fan for the last 5-6 years...plus I hate the Yanks so I fit right in.
Sorry, we were 'Skins fans growing up (until the Panthers came to town).

Two of the hardest days of our lives were giving up the Celtics and 'Skins, when the time came. Those were the teams that my dad's dad loved. But, it was a choice we -- and a lot of other people -- had to make to see a team in Charlotte work.

That's is a nice story JD. While I am a die hard Lakers fan, been one since the early 70's, in away it is nice to see the Celtics back with a competitive team. While I'm obviously a Celtic hater, basketball is at it's best when the two most prestigious franchises in the history of the NBA are at the top. I would love to see another LA/Boston final. To me the LA/Boston rivalry of the 80's was unmatched.
Bird/Johnson was amazing! That was the NBA at its best!
