Laugh at me if you want, but Carl Franks is putting this program in the right direction. I have heard nothing but positive vibes from spring practice, and he hauled in a great recruiting class by our standards. In the next 5 years, Duke football won't be a joke anymore.
Clue for Survivor challenge #4, for the Backstreet Boys tribe.
Boston College is not one of the schools that was vandalized

MD one of only four schools in NCAA history to have won Nat. Championships in both D1 football and Basketball..
Now go away please...
How are the returning players for Duke? O / D / skill / line?
Ummmmm, a decade or so ago GTech was winning a national championship. I assume they had fans their watching them.
Navy is going to be better next year, I hope you werent counting on them for one of your wins. But realistically they are the only shot you have at getting a win. Maybe Northwestern (which whooped Dook last year) or Eastern Carolina (which was actually pretty good last year). If you think you can get a win against Louisville (they ended the season in the top 25) you are a fool. If Dook wins at all next year it will only be one game. Oh and BTW Maryland football was pretty good in the 80's. Ever heard of Bobby Ross and Boomer Esiason?

Tech has a football tradition only matched by FSU in football. They were a Top 5-10 team year after year from the late 40s to the mid 60s. Tech is one of only about 18 or 19 schools with 600 all-time wins.
And as far as the Jackets being "tradional cellar dwellars in basketball", obviously he doesn't remember anything but the last 5 years. Tech went to 9 straight NCAA Tournaments and won 3 ACC Titles from '85 to '93, then won another in '96. Remember players like Mark Price? Kenny Anderson? Dennis Scott? Travis Best? Stephon Marbury? I could go on and on...
...I rest my case...
Here is a brief rundown of Duke's impact players.
Ben Patrick: incoming freshman
He is the Mike Dunleavy of football. At his HS, he played QB, punter, TE, tail back, defensive line, offensive line. He is 6'4" and will probably play TE for Duke next year. Could take first team ALL-ACC Mike Hart's spot due to graduation. Ben was rated 4 stars out of 5 by rivals (much better at ranking football than basketball, IMO) and rated the 15 best TE in the nation; the cornerstone of Duke's incoming class.
Malcolm Ruff: incoming frosh
He is a very good running back, but will probably play safety as a backup to Alex Green. He was rated a 3 star bi rivals as a RB, and was rated a 3 star by Max Emfinger at safety.
Eric Lyon: incoming frosh
3 star WR by rivals. He played on the same HS team as Mario Raley, considered by some as a top 5 WR in the senior class. Both played at Independence day in Charlotte, along with QB phenom Chris Leak. He will probably back up Lance Johnson at the WR.
Eli Nichols: incoming frosh
He got some major interest as a DE from Miami and Florida. He got a call from Coker himself asking for him to take a visit to Miami. He could challenge for a DE spot, if he gains some weight.
Lance Johnson: He is a fast little WR who has really, really come on lately. In spring practice, some said he showed the most improvement out of any of the players. He will probably start at WR.
Reggie Love: Yes, he is the basketball Reggie Love in LK's sig. He is a TE/WR tweener who has really struggled finding a set position. Was highly touted out of HS, but hasn't showed his stuff yet. He will battle out for a WR spot with Khary Sharpe.
Khary Sharpe: Lightning quick. If he could get some muscle in the offseason, and not lose too much speed, he could be very good. He made some great plays last year, and will probably get significant PT at WR if not starting.
Ryan Fowler: Terrific LB. He led Duke in sacks, and was high in the ACC for total sacks (heard somewhere he was actually top 3) He will start at the LB.
Jim Scharrer: He could be very good once he gets back into football mode. He could have gone to very good division one schools out of HS, but chose to play MLB (minor league) instead. He came back, to Duke primarily for education. He popped some people very nicely last year, but was injured in the offseason. Hopefully he will be ready. He will start at LB.
Jamyon Small: Very good at stopping the run. Needs to work on rushing the passer more if he wants to get a shot at the NFL next year. He will start along with Scharrer and Fowler.
Out LBs are terrific: too bad the DL sucks.
RB: Chris Douglas
Honorable mention ALL ACC. He could potentially have a 1000 yard season. This year he came relatively close, and next year he should be better and be able to make a good run at 1000.
QB: D Bryant
In one word, inconsistent. One game he looks like the next John Elway. The next game he looks like an average middle school quarterback. His game resembles Ronald Curry in the way he runs. He runs very well, but doesn't do it often enough. He is injury prone, but when healthy, he contributes very well. He should start.
Safety: Alex Green
He played very, very well last season. He opened some people's eyes in a major way. He should start, unless Ruff turns out to be incredible.
I guess it wasn't so brief after all. Hope this helps, whoever asked.

I think we have the potential to upset a UVA or NCSU on the right day. Don't laugh at the possibility of 3 wins, I believe it will happen. We also have 1 more game next year than last year.

Don't count Wake as a gimmie game. They have improved incredibly under Jim Grobe. They won at UVA and came back from about a 25 point defecit to win at UNC last year. Plus they nearly upset Clemson and Tech.
Duke vs. Wake is no longer the Tidy Bowl. Duke vs. Navy.....now that's another story

Dunleavy is a shooter, nothing more, he doesnt have a defensive presense, no post game nothing but a smooth shot, just because he is 6'9 and he can shoot doesnt mean he is versatile. For people to really believe that Dunlady is versatile is a joke really. If you wanted to compare him to someone who is really versatile how about a young Kordell Stewart or if you really wanted to compare him to a basketball player how about Jared Jefferies.

This is the first good football thread we've had in a long time.
Let's keep it going!
Wake is going to kill Duke. We barely beat them this year, they whooped up on UNC in the second half, and played great games against almost every top ACC opponent. They aren't losing that much either.
OTOH..you have Duke which got spanked by every team in the ACC. Whether they get better or not, Wake should handle Duke easily.
I applaud nate and Big Case for sticking up for their team though. Try and be a little more realistic.
Navy is the only game you have a chance of winning this year. Sorry.
You are highly under rating Dunleavy. He pulls down 7 rebounds a game and gets a lot of steals down low. He's taken some charges this year, too. He has a very good pull up shot, also. One thing I can agree with you on is that he needs some more post moves, and could use even more added weight to bang. Otherwise, to be 6'9"-10", able to shoot long threes, have a silky smooth pull up, pull down 7 rebounds and take charges is what I call versatility.

We ended up losing by either 1 or 2 touchdowns, hardly a spanking. We held our own against GT, too, IIRC. I don't remember what happened with UVA, but I think it was respectable. But, I know for a fact we were tied with Wake late in that game after making a remarkable comeback.

Check that, my mistake.
Duke lost by 21 to GTech. I remember it being close at halftime, that's probably why I thought it was close. We did score 31 against Clemson. Not that it's any consolation to losing by 28, but at least we were scoring. We lost to Wake by 1 TD.

We had a good offense going there. Mike Hart was stellar (should be a fairly high draft pick) and Chris Douglas is someone you expect to see at FSU or Clemson, not Duke. D Bryant had some great games, he just didn't get much help from the other side of the ball.
Our defensive line was absolute pitiful. Alex Green was a great safety, but our corners were pretty bad. If the rest of the team was like out LBs, we would have a great defense. Too bad it's not, though.

Big Case....how about the fact that Maryland leads the all-time series with Duke 26-18? Does that mean that we can talk a little smack with you guys? Or is that meaningles? And how about the fact that we actually have 9 ACC titles and you have 7? We are not tied as you speculated. Does that mean anything? How about the fact that we've been to 17 bowl games and Duke has been to 8? We still have no room to talk when it comes to tradition? How about our national title? I don't think you really know much about Maryland's football history. It seems to me that you only know about the last 10 years....during which time we hold a 20 win advantage over you guys. (MD 45-66, Duke 25-86)
