This guy has been freakin amazing. He just finished batting .488 in June.
His average is now up to .381 this year, and he has been the anchor of the Tigers and the key to the emergence of their pitching staff. This guy has easily been the best player in baseball this year.
Can he hit .400? I don't think so, but the fact we are asking the question shows how amazing he has been.

best player in baseball? not quite. but he has been amazing.

the funny thing is that this is a fallacy. the tigers pitching ranks 11th out of 14 teams in the AL. The reason they're doing so much better is their hitting. Granted, their pitching has been better than last year, but i wouldn't call their staff one which is emerging because of pudge.
Pudge even swiped a base tonight! :fast:
The past two years he has meant more to his team than any player on any other team except maybe Bonds. The Tigers wouldnt be nearly as good as they are without him, and you can say the same for the Marlins last year.

i'd say that was pretty obvious.

I think he is. He has the highest BA in the majors by almost 30 points and he is the best player on one of the most surprising teams in baseball. He slightly edges out Bonds and Rolen.
There's no way he'll hit .400, but he has my vote for AL MVP.

so because he has the highest BA, and he's the best player on his team, that makes him the best player in baseball?

This year, yes. The main reason is that the Tigers are nowhere without him.
He was the best player on the best team in baseball last year. If he keeps it up he should be AL MVP this year but I dont think the Tigers are going to do well enough for him to get it.

the giants lineup falls apart without bonds. grissom would be awful and durham wouldn't be the same player. nor would alfonzo. pudge is definitely the MVP, but not the best player.
Bonds is a great player, but he just doesn't seem to be quite as good this year.
Pudge is playing great for Detroit. He deserves to have a shot at the AL MVP, but unless Detroit wins the Central Division he probably doesn't have a shot. I believe they are 5 games back right now and they seem to be coming together nicely as the season goes on.
Don't forget Dmitri Young was out for a good portion of the season so far and he is back and playing very well right now. That gives the Tigers more offensive punch and it takes some pressure off of Pudge.
Can he bat .400? Possibly, but it is unlikely. I will guess he will finish the season about .375 or so.
By the way, he went 2 for 3 today and is up to .384 now for the season.
rocketfootball Wrote:By the way, he went 2 for 3 today and is up to .384 now for the season.
I know. It seems like he goes 2-3 or 3-4 every game these days.
I know, thats amazing. He is currently at .497 battin' average! Damn, thats high.

umm, no he isn't.

he's hitting .353 with 21 HR's. You would think those stats are good enough by themselves. But i'm not done. he has a .619 OBP. yet the two most amazing stats are;
1) 61 intentional walks (on pace for about 124 IBB!)
2) 16 strikeouts! On pace for a meager 33 K's. that would be a record low for anyone with at least 150 walks.
I guess he really hasn't been that good. give me a break.

With three hits in four at-bats in last night's win over the Indians, Detroit catcher Ivan Rodriguez lifted his major-league leading batting average to .381 and became the first big-league player since Todd Helton in 2000 to hit .450 in a month (minimum 450 at-bats). Pudge established a Tigers' franchise record by hitting .500 (23-for-46) in June.

We doubted Pudge's ability to come in and transform Detroit's clubhouse as a free agent, and he's making us pay. In addition to his otherworldly average in June, he added three ding-dongs, 17 RBI, 16 runs scored, four steals, and 10 extra-base hits. We'd suggest he can't possibly keep this up, but we've been burned before.

First off I didn't say he isn't playing that good. I said he isn't playing quite as good as he has the last few years. That is still better than most! Is that easier for you to comprehend? Next time don't get so defensive when someone is talking about a player on your favorite team! :bang:
Anyway, he has hit a home run in each of the last two games to get up to 21. Before that it was 19 in 77 games for the Giants......granted he did not play in all of those 77 games, but you will see what I am saying in a minute.
That comes out to about 40 home runs for the season. Now I know he is walked alot, but that has happened for a few years now. I am used to seeing him in the upper 50's or even 60 or more. His BA at .353 is pretty good.
Again, I think he is playing great in terms of all players but for him I think he isn't quite as good as he has been the last few years. Some guys are just so good that you can't compare them to others, but to what they have done themselves in recent years.
your argument is irrational, and definitely not factual. His .353 BA is the second best of his career. His .619 OBP is the best of his career. i wish the other giants could be getting worse like that.
you said you are used to see Bonds hitting in the upper 50's-60 HR's. Tell me how many times he has hit 50 HR's, besides the year he hit 73? the answer is;
0!
So i'm not really sure how you can get used to seeing upper 50's-60, when he's only done that once. he is on pace this year for 43 HR's, which is only 2 homers less than last year, and 3 less than the year before that.
keep working on that argument
He did only bat .341 last year, but he batted .370 in 2002.
As for the homeruns I guess you are right. I never realized he only had 1 great season.....it seemed like he hit a lot of HR's in 2002 and 2003 also; I guess not. He must have been taking that drug in 2001 for all those homeruns.
On second thought you changed my mind about Bonds. He is playing really good this year compared to most years for him. He is a very good player, but not a great player like I originally said. Thanks for helping me see the light!

Oh yeah.....and when I made the comment he was at 19 home runs like I said, which wasn't a pace for 43 HR's....it was more like 40 at that time. So, yeah that is down from the past 3 years.
did you say he's not a great player? you do know that sniffing paint thinner is a bad idea?
flyingswoosh Wrote:did you say he's not a great player? you do know that sniffing paint thinner is a bad idea?
Yeah, I said it. He has been a consistenly good player.....how's that?
