I have a SuSE Linux 7.3 CD that I'm thinking about installing. How much trouble will I have getting my hardware (sound card, modem) recognized with this OS?
I've always used Windows, currently 2000 Pro on an old PC. I've used 95, 98, and XP, but I like 2000 better than all of those.
I *strongly* recommend using Mandrake Linux instead as it is quite possibly the most user friendly version of Linux available. Everybody on NCAAbbs that has tried Linux and used Mandrake has had no problems.
It is available for free download at
http://www.mandrakelinux.com
Choose the 3-CD Download Version.
I recommend the Georgia Tech or Virginia Tech mirrors -- quite speedy.
And (this is very important) -- be sure to burn the 3 .iso files you download to CD ... AS A DISC IMAGE aka ISO FORMAT. These are not to be burned as a "data disc" -- if you do, they will not boot. Choose burn as disc image / ISO format
As for your hardware ... Linux recognizes and uses hardware better than Windows*
* ATI 3d accel. and Broadcomm Wifi Cards don't count, b/c both these companies are gay.
To download Mandrake will probably take forever and a day. A dial up connection is all I have available.
OK, I'm totally lost on what to download. :bang:
Since I'm not smart enough to download Mandrake, does that mean I'd never get on line using the SuSE CD that I have?

Yowza!!
Then give SuSe a shot... I have not personally used it, but it is one of the more popular variants of Linux.
As an alternate... cheapiso.com will sell you the mandrake CD's for $5.95.
I may just buy the Mandrake CD's. Thanks!
The only high speed internet I can get is Directway. But I can't see paying $400 to have it installed and $90 a month when I'm already paying Direct an arm and a leg for Direct TV. So I'll just be stuck with dial up.
