bull.
The last 3 seasons show why that's not a consideration.

That "Div III" program was in a bowl last season. We're having a bad season.IT happens. It's a good thing you weren't in charge during the Scherer years. Football would have been cancelled before our three bowl games.
10-14-2006, 08:08 PM
You don't go backwards when you are trying to grow a program. You build every year.
This year will set up back significantly in recruiting, tickets, you fill in the blank.

If Temple hasn't packed it in yet, we sure as hell should not.
10-14-2006, 08:13 PM
This is not the first time we've lost to Ark. St. Did we cancel the football program back then when we lost to them when they were a 1-AA power?
Did the university pull the plug on the football program in 1986 when the Tigers lost to the Indians, 30-10?
If the school had cancelled the program after the 1986 season, Tiger fans would not had the pleasure to enjoy the 1996 win over Tennessee, the first road win against Ole Miss, 3 straight bowl appearances, watching DeAngelo Williams, etc.
Losing to Arkansas State is not the end of the world.

We're having a bad season for a myriad of reasons. Yeah, this is a step backwards. However, we were in OUR FIRST BOWL GAME three seasons ago. Did you expect us to be competing for a national championship this season? Building a program takes time. If Tommy has made any mistakes it was not firing JLD at the end of last season or even two seasons ago. That way we could have at least gotten some JUCO guys in here to plug holes.
10-14-2006, 08:14 PM
Tommy gets one losing year here b/c of his recent success. But it is time to make some changes.
Unacceptable.
But that has been our history - accepting mediocrity. It is time to change that.

You don't think getting rid of Dunn was making a change? Give the guy a break, there is only so much he can do in the middle of a season. The offense is competing. The defense just stinks, and will likely not get better this season.

No I don't "accept" losing to ASU, but it happened.
What's the opposite of accepting it, denying it happened??
Didn't UT try that with last year???
It's important to note that while I don't "accept" losing, I'll still be in the stands supporting the Tigers when they are. What's important is where we go from here. I'll cheer all along, and you'll just be one of those jacka$$ fans that cheer when we win and jump off the wagon when we lose a few. Well then, see you during basketball.

NO we did not expect to be in line for a national championshio but we did expect to field a competitive team that could compete for a CUSA championship....a rebuilding and down year is 6-6 not 1-11 or 1-5 with NO wins over a 1A opponent.

You're overreacting, bone.
This loss hurts - I'm out of town but my brother called me to fill me in on the details - but it is NOT the end of the TIGER football program. All of us realize this season is going to be a very difficult one. Let's not make it worse by adding verbal abuse to the misery those players and coaches are feeling tonight.
You have a right to be disapointed but shouldn't say things that are just unreasonable.

Not a quitter. Just a realist.
I have been following the Tigers for a long time.
It is people like you - who accept mediocrity - that has caused our program to flounder for so many years. When you lose - you do something about it.
We have finally had some success the last few years. But it is beginning to look like our history - another blip on the radar.
Losing to A. State - I don't care who you are - is not the way to "build" a program.

Well hell,
The school has been around since 1927 and we aren't ranked up high enough in the US News college rankings. Let's close the freakin University. There's no reason to accept mediocrity there.
(by your logic, the basketball team would have folded around 1999, and we would have never been a #1 seed last season.)
You cannot call yourself a fan.I know, you say you are a realist. We're ALL realists. We ALL realize that the team sucks right now and that this is turning out to be a horrible season and several steps back. However, anyone who says that we should just quit after HALF OF ONE SEASON is not a fan.

So by your logic we will be a top 5 football team in the near future. Right.
Again - we lost to A. State. There is something really wrong with the program when that happens. We should have been able to blow them out with our 2nd string. We should have rested our 1st string after the 1st quarter if we were any good.
The talent aint there my friend and the coaching has not been good.

Yeah, we're horrible, but you started a thread discussing the need to CANCEL AN ENTIRE PROGRAM based on one HALF of one season.

So if there is anyone that needs to have their total body of work looked at - that would be you.

Really? Your beloved Vols won the national championship in 1998 (against Florida State's 3rd string quarterback, but I digress). They haven't sniffed it since. By your definition, is that going backwards? If it is, by your logic, changes must be made, heads must roll, blah blah blah. It got so bad in the land of Orange they lost to Vanderbilt last year. Why is Fulmer still around, by your logic? Why hasn't UT killed the football program, by your logic?
It would be alot different if you were here and involved. Don't throw stones from 380 miles away.
We suck this year. Deal with it. Or donate $100 MM to the athletic dept and call the shots yourself (including killing football, if you want to).
10-15-2006, 06:21 PM
I never said I wanted to cancel football.
Actually I said "consider it."
Do you really think I want it cancelled??? I said it to get a response and to make a point. We can't go backwards and obviously we have.
Louisville loses it starting QB and running back and they continue to win and move up in the polls. We were close to them a few years back - the year we had the shoot out and they won by a touchdown. The program was headed in the right direction. What has happened to us and them since then?
They have reloaded and win with 2nd string players. And we lose to A. State with our 1st string. That is a major difference in 2 years.
Again - we can't accept mediocrity and losing to A. State and any division whatever program for that matter sets us back with recruiting and the ability to move to another conf. one day.
That is what sucks the most. This year will hurt us significantly in more ways than one. Recruiting, ticket sales, other conf. looking at us. Cal is getting it done and has built a program. I have not seen that much of a backslide in his programs. He continues to get his 20 wins each year.

I tell you what. You give Tommy Louisville's facilities to recruit with and see how much better he does.
Tommy is in a catch 22, his program won't make money unless it wins more, can't win more without better recruits, can't get better recruits without better than D1-AA facilities(which we have).
Reaction or not, cancelling the football program sounds like just the type of kneejerk reaction I see out of fans in this area. They remind me of the fans I saw in 96 that wore UT sweatshirts to the game with Memphis tshirts on underneath. When Memphis won, the UT shirts came off and they celebrated.
There is a certain segment of the Memphis fan base that, honestly, needs to go away. They hurt the program as much as anything else.

And my "beloved Vols" fired 4 coaches last year after a losing season. They don't play games up here when they lose - heads roll. They have not missed a beat this year.
And Vandy ain't all that bad. They beat Georgia yesterday and were close to beating Alabama and Arkansas.
And they have not lost to the A. States of the world this year. They actually pounded Tn State and Temple their guaranteed wins on their schedule.
We have to be able to destroy the A. States of the world - our guaranteed wins on the schedule.

As far as the football situation - we are not moving forward. Come on - a loss to A. State. Unacceptable in any season. Have you ever been to A. State. It is about the size of Germantown High School. That is an embarassing loss.

I'm not arguing. I'm correcting you, like I always have. ;-)
So the Vols fire 4 coaches, and Tommy fires one (during the season no less). He is doing what needs to be done. That has NEVER happened here before.
We also lost a couple of assistants to places like Ga Tech and Clemson, and that has hurt continuity too. But the main problem is Tommy's health. He is not his usual self. You can tell by looking at him and listening to him. And you have sold enough heart stints in your day to know what a triple bypass will do to you.
Next year we will have a new DC, some JUCO help on the defense, and most importantly, a healthy and pissed off head coach who will have the fire back in his eyes and the vinegar back in his piss. We will be fine.
Since when do you argue for Vandy? Georgia is WAY over rated. Alabama is not good. Arkansas lost by 36 at home to USC, and proceeded to pound Auburn. What that tells me is that the SEC ain't all that this year.
