apologies to Jack Nicholson, but WHAT IF this is as good as it gets??
I know we all have visions of being able to play on a national stage. We all have dreams of being in one of the power conferences. I am starting to believe that too many of us are living in a fantasy world. We have never even been a factor in C-USA, much less a player for a spot in a BCS conference. Maybe it's time to ask ourselves "What if this IS as good as it gets?'' Are we still prepared to support the Tigers in C-USA for eternity? Should we just accept our lot in the college football hierarchy and enjoy what we have?
We all have vision of an angel swooping down with the cash to improve our situation but so far he hasn't appeared. There is a lot of dreaming and suppositions about who could help and how they can help, but the bottom line is that we are still waiting. What if the angel never comes? Are we prepared to be enthusiastic about being a middle of the pack C-USA team for eternity? What if this really is as good as it gets?

As a lifelong Memphian and alum, I'll always support the Tigers. However, if the heat gets to be too much, you could always take a correspondence course to the elite football university of your choosing, giving you valid claim to being an alumnus, at which point you can switch your allegiances.
I recommend Florida. They own UT, which already makes them easy to like:

I ask myself that question all the time, about all aspects of life.
If it is, it's better than it was 10 years ago.
To answer your attempt at stirring up more crap, all I'll say is I am a Memphis Tiger fan, and that's the only kind of fan I know how to be. If we were relegated to the Sun Belt tomorrow, I'd still buy my season tickets to see us play against Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Troy, Louisiana-Monroe and Lafayette, and Arkansas State.
Yeah, I've mentioned before that I'd like to see a quality OOC game happen here besides Mississippi and/or Tennessee, but that doesn't change what I am...and that's a Memphis Tiger fan.

This is not a debate. Most are Tiger fans on here. If you want to be a Hotty Toddy boy, that is your right. But just because you want to start a meaningless thread over the dire straights just because we finally got rid of some dead weight on our staff, doesn't mean we need to respond. Your statement is dumb and untrue. If you believe it, have fun with O and the Wild Boyz.

I agree with the group on this one. Btiger needs to get a life besides trying to stir up trouble. Very weak even for you B. We don't care or buy the fact that you are what you say you are. Your actions and statements seem pretty backhanded to us all. Maybe it is time for you to just enroll at OM and be a part of that group. They too seem assanine and delusional. You should fit in. lmfao
Come on B, why do you post stuf like this? I feel like you always wanna run us down--
btiger always has some sort of credibility to his posts... however exaggerated it could be. To be honest, going 7-4 could be as good as it gets for this program, but there are several factors to consider before rushing to that judgment:
- Tommy West has continued his success with this football program. There are no signs that it will not continue (this season is not over).
- JLD refused to recruit. How many defensive players would we have gotten that we wanted had this not been the case?
- The future isn't bleak. True, we will lose a lot of experience at DB and DL after this season but we will still retain a nice core: Martin Hankins, Joe Doss, Earnest Williams, Dave Thomas, Duke Calhoun, Miguel Barnes, TJ Pitts, Quinton McCrary, Rod Smith, Heath Grant, Corey Mills, Jake Kasser, Corderick Govan, Ryan Williams, Abraham Holloway, Brandon Pearce, etc.
- No more 3 man fronts. Like it's been said over and over... once you see JLD's system for a few seasons, you start to see the holes in it.
- Mounting support. Each year it seems like a couple thousand who didn't have season tickets the previous year are holders the next. The more noise we make amongst fans... the more potential recruits hear our name.
- Randy Fichtner. He will be gone as soon as someone begins thinking logically and gives him a chance at the HC level. Despite the 5 INTs last week @ ECU, if there are a few pass intereference calls or a few tips that turn into catches... we have a pretty solid offensive performance. We have maintained that every season under him, including one where our #1 WR moves to QB... we also suffered several injuries at WR last year as well.
- Better scheduling. I know we all want to play 3 SEC teams every year, but let's face it... we can't win those games yet (on a regular basis). I believe in the future there will be years where we will only play 1 SEC team.
Those are a few reasons why I believe we will continue to a bowl team and still leave room for improvement. I don't think we've topped ourselves out yet.
If you are such a great fan that has been through all the down times like you speak...
Why do you almost NEVER have positive things to say about the football team, players, coaches, fans or things associated with them?
Do you not relish in the improvement that we have made over the last years?
Do you not like that we are a highly competitive team that has shown flashes of taking the next step, even though we haven't quite made it yet?
Do you not see the growth in fans, community support and Tiger merchandise?
I just don't get how EVERYTHING is so negative with you...
kpigout Wrote:b...this is probably the dumbest question you have ever asked.

Fred Smith just gave $10MM to the zoo, where I'm sure his kids occasionally visited when they were younger.
If his son plays football for and graduates from the University of Memphis, I would expect a commensurate donation.
I doubt seriously he will let his son travel second class.

Rome wasn't built in a day. Our football program has made tremendous strides, and I believe we have the right people running the program. The reality is most fans of most schools can't handle the truth of where there program is. Whether, it's mississippi, ut, arkansas or Memphis. Where we want to be is different than where we are...the question is legimitate...have we experienced the apex of where we are going.
oldtiger Wrote:btiger Wrote:Are we still prepared to support the Tigers in C-USA for eternity?
Eternity is a long time, but for my time here on earth, the answer is YES.
I agree with Oldtiger.
btiger Wrote:kpigout Wrote:b...this is probably the dumbest question you have ever asked.
I'm just curious as to whether or not some of the newcomers are prepared to hang around if we are enjoying our finest moment. Maybe we should all just enjoy what we have and quit worrying about the BCS and such.
I think it's a valid question.
We have picked up quite a few new fans in the last 5 years. If we go 3-9 this year how many season tickets will we sell next year and will donations drop?
griffin Wrote:the question is legimitate...have we experienced the apex of where we are going.
I don't think so - we could easily be 3-0 right now...we have inexperience at key positions and have some scheme problems, but overall, I think we have a good amount of talent on the field...I look for us to close strong leading into next season where we will have experience almost everywhere and hopefully not as many lapses in concentration...and for the most part, I am talking about QB and K...the guys we have in there just need to adjust their mental part of the game because physically they can play and perform at a high level...
If this is as good as it gets, it is still better than Miss State.

Tigers2BeChamps Wrote:- Randy Fichtner. He will be gone as soon as someone begins thinking logically and gives him a chance at the HC level. Despite the 5 INTs last week @ ECU, if there are a few pass intereference calls or a few tips that turn into catches... we have a pretty solid offensive performance.
One of the interceptions on Saturday occured when an ECU defender was molesting a Memphis WR. Even the ECU fan I sat next to agreed that the interception should have been called back because of the pass interference and that the ECU player should register as an adult sex offender over the way he molested our player. It was a horrible non-call.
Well, it seems to me that if you learn from history, this is as good as it gets. I will always be a Memphis fan, I was there when there were 10-20,000 at a game. I've been going to games since the '60s.
But, I think we have one last chance to get in a real conference. There will have to be at least one more realignment before the "haves" with their BCS moniker, kick the "have-nots" to the curb.
All "BCS" conferences will have 12 teams in the near future.
1. Vanderbilt, Tulane and Baylor may all voluntarily excuse themselves due to lack of stomach for what college athletics has become.
2. The Big Ten will add Notre Dame
3. The Pac Ten will add 2 ( if from other BCS conferences, that could free up a spot or 2) but CSU, BYU, Utah, Fresno State, SDSU, UNLV and others are out that way and as desperate as we are.
4. The Big East will add 4 more teams, unless a current member goes D1.
ECU, Marshall, UCF, USM, UAB, and others, all want one of those spots.
5. There could be an outside possibility (way outside) of one, or 2, more conference being accepted into the inner circle if, and only if, enough political pressure can be mustered.
So, anything short of CUSA and the MWC, or some other combination being let in. We will, at very best, be fighting for 8 slots and at worst 4 or fewer. But, we will be competing with
UAB
USM
ECU
Marshall
Houston
Tulsa
UTEP
SMU
TCU
BYU
Utah
CSU
and many, many more for those few remaining spots. So I would say our chances are slim, not to none, but slim of getting in. Basketball and football attendance are our 2 best selling points and we rank near the top in both (combine the 2 - basketball program quality and football support - and we may be the top) but a lot of these other schools can make good arguements too.
The best thing for us and the MWC to do is to apply as much political pressure as we possibly can to show that we are unjustly getting shut out of college football through no fault of our own and allow 8, 12 team conferences into the top level of NCAA football.

Okay, so I want to get you on record. Are you saying that this move makes us a C-USA bottom dweller? You don't think we can win a C-USA divisional title? You don't think we can win C-USA? You think this is as good as it gets?
Man am I glad there is a strong group in our fanbase that doesn't feel that way. While you act like you KNOW so much about the program, so do you think that Tommy doesn't expect us to get any better? To be one of the C-USA schools in fundraising, attendance, etc. I doubt most will believe that we should assume ourselves in line behind UAB, ECU, UCF, etc. every year. I think most have realistic expectations of at least competing for a division title every couple of years in C-USA. This isn't the SEC we are talking about, we actually have a top two team attendance wise in this conference. So yea, more can be expected.
But don't spin this any other way. I expect us to be competitive every two to three years for our division. I am not expecting a conference championship every other year or BCS busting anytime soon. With the support and money continuing to grow, expecations will as well. And yes, if a small school in Tulsa, Oklahoma can win the conference, we can too.

Eddie, This question wasn't about any "move". It was simply food for thought. You are the one that turned this whole thread into a circus. We got a few thoughtful responses and you and your ilk slinging mud.
i didnt bail in the rip years so i would say i can handle it all...
even if it is, i'll still be here.
my frustration is at how long it's taking, not if it will ever come.
i complained pretty loud when we were 2-9 also. but i still showed up every week.
The fact that this got moved to the smack forum is bull****.
It is what it is.
Yes.
No.
We'll get over it.
Yes.
Then we could count on you to spend more time in the $ec hottub, Oxfart and Knoxvegas?
