Full Version: The movement to bring back football

As everyone knows, I'm skeptical. I keep hearing about "Top Men," yet these so-called "Top Men" allow David Mullins to be involved in the group and instead of unseating the man who removed the sport- Paul Stanton- they want to work with him.

If you're working with those two- you don't need "Top Men." You need Top Hypmotists.

It makes the group look like they are willing to go along with anything the ruling class of the family says as long as they get to sit at the head of the Thanksgiving table.

Aggression- boys! Aggression! You gotta get those two out!

Even Lassard.

Regardless, it seems as if the task force has gotten off to a clunker. First, the editorial in the JC Press and then, if you read the Buc Football board, you get Kim herself admitting to infighting in her committee.

"We have several key people running things that have a serious D3 mentality. Not being negative, just being truthful."- That's right from her board.

This stems from the overriding thought that if football is to return all sports must support themselves- rather than the reality it won't. And that's going to be a good obsticale for them to overcome.

I think you have to face how much people care. Sad to say, but it seems that Joe Johnson City will hike their skirts for Knoxville before they support their own home town.

Now, I know I'll get attacked.

But what else can you say?
Aggression- boys!
You have basically said this foundation wont work since the beginning. You have criticised them for not being aggressive enough. Well not being aggressive got them a committee to reinstate the program. Why would being aggressive now help them out? I think they have done a fine job and have gotten us to a point that we never thought we would arrive at. Football is seriously being looked at again.
Pitt,
Do your research.

Again I say do your research.
What else can you say? I have a feeling the D-3 mentality being referred to was that of Lassard and Harris. Dr. Robertson has done EVERYTHING the right way, crossed the T's, dotted the i's, and now this committee is formed. So yea, why wouldn't the athletic director be on there? Also, I think the reference probably refers to the overrall mentality of the school thinking that tennis and golf should be funded at the same level and put on there in the same level of importance as football.
You kind of remind me of Scott Evil in the Austin Powers movies, Pitt... Ya just don't get it, do ya? BucDoctor do, Pittbuc n'est pas... Rodshaw do, Pittbuc n'est pas...
Keep talking about how its' being handled, once football is brought back there just won't be much else you can say...
BTW, shouldn't you be at the All-Star game? Oh that's right, nevermind...
The D-3 quote was taken right from Kim talking about her own foundation.

That's the research I did. It's the own foundation cheerleader stating publicly that they have in-fighting and unrealistic goals.

There's a difference between having a research committee and an actual plan to bring back the program. ETSU fans have nothing right now.

To believe that they will be effective without a plan to get rid of Mullins and Stanton (and Fred Warren) is to say that suddenly these people will leap out of their seat and say- "OH! YOU KNOW WHAT! WE REALLY DO LIKE FOOTBALL AFTER ALL!"

Uh, that's not going to happen.

What's even the TARGET DATE for bringing back football?

Dont you see the first thing they did was rip up the basketball arena so any extra revenue would go to a new hoops arena and not to a new football stadium? Are you so naive to believe that there's enough money for both- or that there's enough money in all of Appalachia to build both things?

I hope I'm wrong. I really do.

But all evidence I see says otherwise.
Pitt,
Your talking yet not listening.

Do your research.

Again I say do your research.
You know damn well I always do.

Now then, here's what I'm getting this off of-

Here's Kim's post. It's right here-

"We have several key people running things that have a serious D3 mentality. Not being negative, just being truthful."

NOW- AND I'M NOT SHOUTING HERE I JUST AM TRYING TO MAKE MY POINT STAND OUT A BIT MORE- BUT THAT'S KIM TALKING ABOUT HER OWN FOUNDATION!

We had a limited discussion on tiering of sports on another thread. I was looking though the notebook that I have from the 1999 Intercollegiate Task Force and found a document that talked about structuring ETSU's athletic department in a way that sports with the most visibility and regional impact would recieve the appropriate level of funding. (That originial document will be part of what I send to Doc's group). ETSU was putting a tiering system in to place when Frank Pergolizzi was the AD but he accidently put the "wrong" sports in the wrong tier and lost his job. Stansbury wanted to tier and was going about it ever-so-quitely but he learned pretty early on not to mess with Coach Warren and Dave's Pizza Party money, so the system was still skewed.

I DONT BELIEVE THAT FOR A SECOND- AND HERE'S WHY-

First of all, does anyone REALLY believe that this is why Pergolizzi left? Seems to me he left on his own accord.

And if he puts the wrong sports in the wrong tier, and then Stansbury puts the right sports in the right tier and then Warren and Mullins get on Stansbury and he leaves to go to Oregon State- then how would putting the wrong sports in the wrong tier cost him his job?

The obvious point is that Kim is re-writing history- saying that Pergolizzi was fired (when he left on his own accord) and that he didn't do the very thing that she says forced Stansbury to move on.

Now, could Warren and Mullins forced Pergolizzi to put golf higher than football on the tier Kim talks about? Possibly. But then Pergolizzi wasn't fired (and that's common knowledge)- and with such a football reputation he probably got out when he saw that working with these folks was calling the shots.

I did a series of pieces on former ADs at ETSU right after they dropped football.

Pergolizzi, who brought back football at Southeastern Louisiana, made this statement about having a football program at your college-

"You have to have a president that wants to do it."

You run off three ADs in five years and you want to tell me that Stanton is pro-athletic dept.?

Don't say "Do your research." That's condescending and you know damn well I'll slap you for that.

Tell me what you know if you know otherwise.

Leaders are aggressive. Servants are passive. Pete Paduch didn't get to by mayor by cheerleading ETSU- he got there by running a series of print ads critical of the athletic dept. back when there wasn't as much to be critical about.

And we still have a lousy athletic program in the worst conference in America thanks to the very people that we're now trying to make nice with.

That's not going to work.

[/b]
Pitt:

As BucDoctor said, do real research. You criticize Press writers, justifiably so, for taking only one source. You are stating these things on one vague statement from a message board. The D3 mentality is that of Dave Mullins and other non-revenue sport proponents at ETSU. It is not of the members of the Foundation. They are speaking of goals which are far from D3. Thoroughly investigate the attitudes of those involved, the ambitions of the members of the committee and the Foundation, and the entire facts of the situation of football at ETSU and then offer a well-constructed and factually supported opinion.

Until then, your opions, which appear to be based upon a personal agenda and bias against some individuals, are irrelevant and easlily proven unreliable.
ETSU can't bring back football as a DIV II sport unless they drop EVERYTHING to the DIV II level. You can't pick and chose your programs and their level. If they bring back football it as to be at the DIV 1AA level.
All or nothing.

R
I emailed Kim and asked her what she meant by that quote. See my above post. She was talking about Mullins, Stanton, etc... and the overrall D-3 mentality at the school. She went on further to say that the unrealistic goals she was talking about was FULLY FUNDING EVERY SPORT. Had you bothered to do your research, or hell just read the whole post thoroughly you would have noticed that she talked about App State only funding four sports fully, and one of them just got some major national exposure, they won the national title. Pergolizzi, Stansbury and Fry all left for the same reasons... Again, she was working with them daily, while you were playing dungeons and dragons... with yourself. The "wrong" sports on the wrong tier were giving football too much money according to Lt. Harris and not enough to tennis/golf...
And by the way, someone tried to slap me once... once... DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! Better yet, just go away, West Va. Tech has another exciting season of men's soccer coming up for you to cover... Of course you wouldn't DO YOUR RESEARCH there either, so that would be pointless too...
First of all I was named as one of the top investigative sports reporters in Tennessee in 2004 by the TSWA. So you're VERY wrong on that.

What you are doing is putting a false sense of romanticism and faith in the only hope (theoretically) to bring it back.

Many of the group is made up of your friends and neighbors. Wonderful.

Doesn't refute the fact they will have to deal with the same people that killed the sport in the first place.

By the way, here's the whole quote-

WE have several key people running things that have a serious D3 mentality.

WE- thus meaning The Football Foundation.

If she meant ETSU- then you are putting your faith in someone who- at best- has made a serious grammatical mistake and at worst is tremendously unprofessional.

Players who hear fans say "we" wonder what they did on the field. Journalists who use "we" are considering unmittigated shills and wannabe flaks.

ETSU is NOT we to this woman. She is employed by Chattanooga.

It seems to me she is covering her tracks if she emailed you.

Funny, though, that you have so much faith in her but yet it is me that you spend the majority of the day fighting with on here JD.

Hmmmmmm.
If it is a battle between putting faith into someone of your stature or Kim Reece. I will definitely go with the individual who has done extensive professional research on college athetics, ETSU football, and Title 9. If you want to feel that you have better credentials to have a well-educated opinion on the matter at hand then feel free to do so. However, I will put my faith into the well-educated, well-connected individual who has routine conversations with members of the Foundation and who has worked in a professional setting with numerous members of the task force.
Pitt you won your award for SMALL WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS... You got it while writing for the Erwin Record, I think in the same year Kramer successfully defended his karate trophy against a tomato can, and Seinfeld still chose not to run. But not to worry, the TSWA didn't make the same mistake again, of course granted they couldn't make it because you were thankfully gone.
My faith isn't in any one person, it's in a system of getting things done the right way. And actually, I don't personally know anyone on the task force to bring back football, DO YOUR RESEARCH PITT. WE meant ETSU as a whole, not the Football Foundation. She did graduate from there moron, just the same as you refer to the Steelers using the phrase "we."
I think the best thing still for you to do is to disappear, The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals have another exciting swimming season coming up, and I'm sure some rathole rag up there will need you to cover it.
You're proof as to why West Virginia should have never been granted statehood.
I wrote for the Erwin Record?

When did this happen?

By the way, props to one guy. Brian Woodson- who went from the Erwin Record and is now the Sports Editor at a daily in Bluefield, W. Va.

Now, that said. The Tennessee Sportswriters Association has three different classes.

One is for the big metros like Knoxville- the other is for the smaller dailies- and the other was for the non-dailies.

They don't expect you to break much in the non-dailies. They expect you to write about the things you say.

I didn't. I broke the stuff. That's why they put me in the daily papers category and I beat 'em.

So again, Mr. Larue, that's a big O for 2 for you.

Telling me to do research is like telling Jonas Salk to wash his hands before surgery. You don't know how stupid it makes you look, idiot.

But, then again, Swagger's doing a pretty good job at it . . . 03-yawn ;-)
Half-Cat- If she's so educated- then why can't she write using-

A- Proper grammar (we still have no idea who "we" is- not to mention in context it is used it is about the most unprofessional word you can use)

AND

B- Accuracy. Pergolizzi wasn't fired.

And

C- Common sense. Pergolizzi supposedly loses his job because he puts the wrong sports in the top tiers.

Then Stansbury loses his job because he puts the RIGHT sports in the top tiers!

It makes no sense! This is the great mind you want to present to me! lmfao

You have to understand something. Kim is not an insider. She is a cheerleader. She doesn't have ethics- which is something I DO have.

And if you doubt it- then where are my illegitimate kids?

Gee, what's more immoral? Playing a bad guy character on the internet to get some attention (that YOU eat up) or THAT?

One is play time- the other is reality. I'll let you decide.
When you become relevant in the realm in which I am interested, I will care about your opinion. Until then, have fun looking at the American Legion players girlfriends. 04-bolt
Or stalking them...
You won the award in the non-dailies by the way.... Quit LYING... And Swagger isn't making look like anything, just watch the Ramblin Wreck in many of their Thursday night or Jefferson Pilot regional TV games and you'll see either a half empty Bobby Dodd stadium or one filled with the other team's fans, period.
The funny thing is how ungrateful Swagger is... If it weren't for Tennessee, and actually the Tri-Cities, they wouldn't have a clue who Bobby Dodd is. The Vols coined the phrase "In Dodd We Trust."
Oh well, I'm done, this board has turned to garbage, ala the UNCG board.
First of all, RockyTop- you may be right there!

Although I find it convienent you somehow gloss over the NFL and Steelers article I did. That one was on yahoo sports.

Hmmmm.

A few bulletpoints-

A- I admit the stuff about my work history has gotten a bit old. But if you were receiving false accusations on here, wouldn't you want to defend yourself?

Like Lover. I was forgetting which category I won the award against the dailies. It turned out to be investigative reporting and enterprise for my uncovery of Ed DeChellis' departure (and I love it when guys like Rod Shaw and thedoctor say I'm a hack then turn around and use my work to play their little selective games. I was the only one to have the guts to report that- and we all know I love DeChellis) and of interviewing the old ETSU ADs when Mullins realized he couldn't use me as his propaganda board like he does Kelly Hodge.

B- I have serious doubts that a place as stuffy and conservative as East Tennessee- would use the phrase "In Dodd We Trust."

He played at UT- what- three years after the Scopes Trial? Knowing how stuffy people are in Tennessee- especially in that era- are- I would think such a phrase would be considered blasphemous.

Regardless- wow. Georgia Tech has a historical UT link. ETSU has tons more Georgia Tech links. You have opened your mouth up with an innaccurate statement once again and now it's more than the board loudmouth getting on your case.

C- This board has not turned to garbage.

You know when it WAS garbage? When we had this guy on here from England or something telling us how wonderful it was that ETSU was getting cultured because they were getting rid of American football for REAL football.

This board- in the middle of the down period of time- gives hard-hitting and accurate commentary to ETSU sports and the surrounding entities about it that otherwise would not be heard and should be heard.

Now, you want that to continue? Here's what you do. You get rid of the idiots who would attack me.

D- Final DO YOUR RESEARCH point- how do you stalk someone from 400 miles away?

No, seriously.

You have got to be the most idiotic, imbecilic, and now IMMORAL wacko to ever grace these boards, Lover.
Check the history books on him. I doubt Dobyns-Bennett used that, but the two sport star actually was an all American in football as a player. Go through the football museum in Knoxville, the last time I was in there the quote was in there with his name.
How does this board get accurate, hard hitting commentary? You turn this into your own personal forum for attacking people for their opinions, all the while trying to get Kim Reece to post on here... Do you have the hots for her or something?
Also, you were the only entry in the category that you won your award...
This board has turned to crap. Where are all the old posters? CSIBuc, TreeStreet, etc??? The answer? They don't fool with it anymore because of you, but don't think they aren't fans...
Do my research? How do you "cover" a team from 400 miles away when you can't get a credential to the team you're covering?
This is my last post on the matter, you're a freaking idiot Marky, period. There are professors that are STILL AFRAID OF YOU at ETSU, not because you're some great journalist, but because you're a damn nut. I mentioned your name one time to some profs that have been there for awhile, and they all asked how I knew about you, and where you were, they, much like EVERYONE ELSE HERE WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. Go cover your American Legion baseball and write garbage pieces about the Steelers for that little hick town in West Virginia.
A little testy, are we?

Little Boy, let me tell it to you straight.

Ain't nobody going to believe-

A- A town between Pittsburgh and Cleveland is "hicker" (hey, I just invented a word!) than Johnson City

B- You'll be remembered by anyone 10 years after graduation by the way-those professors are AFRAID of me? You mean for trying to promote things like actual reporting over how to use an edit machine?

Fear. Yes, that's the proper word to use. Fear breeds respect.

C- I want some Kim on my board. I only tell it like it is with her. She's as egotistical as I am but, unlike me, wears blinders and, as evidinced by her posts on bucfootball.com, is making a mockery of the educational dept at ETSU since she has no concept of the proper use of pronouns.

D- A museum piece with "In Dodd We Trust" in the display means that they were using that phrase in 1928.

If a sportswriter in Knoxville used that in 1928 he'd be lynched!

E- "How do you "cover" a team from 400 miles away?" The same way Mark Bernier how he hosts a local talk show from farther away. Is there no one in the Tri-Cities capable of handling media chores?

Well, evidently not. That's why the area has lost a TV news station, why Power Talk 870 only exists as the Hill family plaything, why Sports Talk couldn't make it after I left, why the Johnson City Star couldn't make it, WGOC is totally satelite feed, etc. etc. etc.

It's interesting to see how you have not fully comprehended how one can use telephones, internet, etc. to cover something- yet naively believe every embelished story about me from people I probably insulted 10 years ago and therefore have an agenda against me.

Why don't you answer my old question "How do you stalk someone 400 miles away?"

Go ahead. I'm waiting on that one. That one made you look REAL credible- especially now.

F- I was the only one entering into the investigative reporting awards at a daily newspapers?

As much as I'd like to believe that was true- that I was the only investigative reporter in Tennessee- and that I was doing it from Pittsburgh- no- they do actually have investigative reporters in Knoxville, Nashville and other parts of the state.

What's the next thing you're going to make up there, JD?

G- CSI Buc? Please tell me anything interesting he ever had to post on here.

TreeStreet. There was a man. He was the guy who said that he was going to physically assualt me. I called him out- told him I'd come right to his house on my next trip down there- and he chickened out.

I would now like to apologize to poultry everywhere for linking them with TreeStreet.

You answered this question in the same post.

E- "How do you "cover" a team from 400 miles away?" ?

.

I can just as easily call someone who lives 400 miles away as 4 miles and leave messages on thier answering machine. I can also post crude comments on the internet about someone from anywhere.

As you pointed out yourself Pitt in this modern day and age it is easy to do lots of stuff from long range.

R

Uh, No Rod.

Maybe this is why you didn't make it as a PI.

But hey, since I did this- GO TO THE DAMNED COURTHOUSE AND FIND A COMPLAINT!

A summons.

A note of cease and desist.

What's that, oh, yeah, there isn't one.

You do it any more, I'm going to get a lawyer.

And why is that?

Oh, yes. Because you're EFFING LYING!!!!!!!

You are going to get a lawyer for what? I never said you were stalking anyone, that would be Lover, you asked how something could be done and I simply answered you question. You are the one who keeps getting bent out shape and bringing it up. You asked that stupid question about a half a dozen times and I finally got tired of seeing it and decided to answer it for you. A Major part of stalking is "unconsented contact" and if you will refer to definition of that (#5) and read parts E and F you will see that yes indeed stalking can be done from long range. You wanted ananswer to your question, there you go. Again I am not saying you did that but that it is indeed very possible.

"Stalking" means a willful course of conduct involving repeated or continuing harassment of another individual that would cause a reasonable person to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, threatened, harassed, or molested and that actually causes the victim to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, threatened, harassed, or molested.

REPEATED- it says.

I asked a chick out for a cup of coffee for God's sake.

ONCE!

SO HOW IS THAT STALKING?

In fact, how is it anybody's business but my own?

Now go die on the cross. Seriously.
A lawyer? Please... Has it cost you your job? NO. Can you prove any financial, emotional or physical loss over it, no? Hell Pitt, you can't prove whether anyone actually wrote down this alleged stalking comment, or spoke it out. So is it slander, or is libel? The courts haven't decided that yet. It's a message board loser, get over yourself.
