Macon, Ga. - The University of Central Florida swept the 2004-05 all sports trophies for the third year in a row as announced by the conference office on Monday. The Jesse C. Fletcher and Sherman Day awards are given annually to the top men and women's athletic programs throughout the academic year.
Named after one of the founders of the conference, the Jesse C. Fletcher trophy was awarded to UCF for the seventh time since joining the A-Sun in 1992. The Golden Knights have clinched the title, even though there are two weeks left in the baseball regular season. With 153.0 points, UCF has won the regular season soccer and basketball championships, as well as tennis championship. UCF's baseball team is currently in second place in the standings and will qualify for the championship with just one win in its final six games.
Georgia State, on the heels of just winning the men's golf championship, currently stands in second with 133.5 points. Belmont, winners of the cross country title, stands third with 127.5 points. Rounding out the top five are Mercer with 96 points and Florida Atlantic with 85.5. The Owls also took a share of the regular season soccer title with UCF. Campbell stands in sixth, with 84 points, followed by Troy (73.5) and Gardner-Webb (67.5). Lipscomb (61.5), Stetson (52.5) and Jacksonville (52.5) round out the standings with only baseball remaining.
The Sherman Day Trophy is named in honor of Sherman Day, one of the original founders of the New South Women's Conference, who served as commissioner from 1987-91, when it became a part of the Atlantic Sun. UCF won the title for the fourth consecutive year and seventh time since 1995. The Golden Knights won both the regular season basketball championship and the track and field championship. UCF also had a runner-up finish in soccer, accumulating 227.5 points this season, just a half-of-a-point shy of the mark the school set last year.
Florida Atlantic, which won the volleyball and tennis titles, finished the year with 214.5 points, while Georgia State finished third with 193.5 points after winning the golf championship. Troy finished fourth with 175.5 points, taking the softball title, while Campbell finished in fifth with 145.5 points and the regular season soccer championship. Belmont won its fourth straight cross country title to finish sixth with 127.5 points, while Stetson finished seventh with 123 points. Jacksonville (121.5), Mercer (94), Lipscomb (84) and Gardner-Webb (76.5), rounded out the standings.
Teams are awarded points based on regular season finish in team sports and championship finish in individual sports. The points are awarded in descending order in three-point increments, beginning at 33 for the win with all ties splitting the points.
