This Hustle and Flow movie has me thinking about movies filmed in Memphis...Like the Firm
starring Matt Damon and Danny Devito
The Rainmaker
Wasn't the Blues Brothers suppost to take place in Memphis but it was filmed somewhere else?
Just my opinion, but the Cash movie, "Walk The Line" may end up being the best out of all of them..
THE FIRM for sure. I must have watched that movie 20 times. I also finally figured out that when Gene Hackman offered to sip some HAVANA CLUB in the Cayman Islands with Jeanne Tripplehorn he was referring to a VERY GOOD Cuban rum that is illegal in the USA. Had some HAVANA CLUB a few weeks ago and it was VERY GOOD.
Too many of the Grisham movies seem like a tourist ad. I've heard that 21 grams was pretty good.
Does anyone remember "I Was a Teenage Werewolf for the FBI"?

It was a movie filmed as a project for a class at the UM and was shown on WMCTV. It was pretty funny stuff with all of the locations being around town.
Making the Grade filmed at Southwestern (Rhodes)...
Can we count that half a second shot in "The Silence of the Lambs?"

But I loved Project Pat in Choices... lol
THE CLIENT is my second choice.
well, the best movie ever filmed in Memphis was Silence of the Lambs.

Others include:

Making the Grade (Last American Preppie) with Andrew Dice Clay

The Rose with Bett Midler

And, the academy award winning Great Balls of Fire with Dennis Quaid and Winona Rider

The People vs Larry Flynt with Woody Harrellson
21 grams as far as best film.

The Firm or The Rainmaker for a national Come To Memphis advertisement.

what about queens of comedy and MTV cribs (Josey Scott's place)
left those two out

For what? A crowded Mud Island or Platinum Plus?

I think Cast Away is the better advertisement... Tom Hanks did all that, to get back to Memphis and his Memphis Belle.
The best "come to Memphis" ad starts on Labor Day and ends in March!!!!!!!!! 04-cheers

The cotton exchange, the deli (can't remember the name) downtown, Central gardens, dog track (i know it is west memphis), the "m" bridge, Dannys (i know it was shut down).

I could have sworn Tom Hanks spent about 99 % of that movie on an island. If you want to call that the best Fed Ex ad ever I would agree.

Yeah, I remember it. Actually it was titled... "I Was a Zombie for the FBI". It was filmed all over campus and around town. It starred Larry Raspberry. Marius Penczer wrote and directed.

The FBI saw it and loved it. They used to (maybe still do) show it at their Quantico Training Base to rookie FBI agents as entertainment.
The Rain Maker was a good movie.

I use to be a regular at Danny's.

No one has mentioned the strangest of them all. "Mystery Train". It had 3 stories all centering around the same seedy downtown hotel (not sure which one it was).

It had Rufus Thomas in a cameo role (at creepy looking Central Station) and the Tri State Defender in the script (check out the quotes below) in a scene shot at World News (on Monroe, heard it closed last year) . What a wierd movie.

Memorable Quotes from
Mystery Train (1989)

Night Clerk: Well, what about on Jupiter?
Bellboy: At the time of his death, if he were on Jupiter, Elvis would've weighed six-hundred and forty-eight pounds.
Night Clerk: Six-hundred and forty-eight. Damn.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Johnny: Don't call me Elvis! If you can't use my proper name, why don't you try "Carl Perkins, Jr." or something? I mean, I don't call them "Sam & Dave", do I?
Dave: Hey, man. My name is Dave.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jun: You know, Memphis does look like Yokohama. Just more space. If you took away sixty percent of the buildings in Yokohama, it would look like this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mitzuko: Hi! Good night!
Night Clerk: Good night. How may I help you?
Mitzuko: Umm... We would like most cheap room please do you have?
Night Clerk: All our rooms for two people are the same rate.
Mitzuko: Oh.
Jun: (speaking in Japanese) What'd he say?
Mitzuko: (speaking in Japanese) I'm not exactly sure. (In English) I'm sorry, that is too expensive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mitzuko: Jun, why do you only take pictures of the rooms we stay in and never what we see outside while we travel?
Jun: Those other things are in my memory. The hotel rooms and the airports are the things I'll forget.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Mitzukoand Jun hear a loud noise outside]
Mitzuko: Was that a gun?
Jun: Probably. This is America.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Newsvendor: What can I do you for?
Luisa: I would like to buy this newspaper.
Newsvendor: Well now, you should buy this one here as well. The Tri-State Defender.
Luisa: No, thank you. I think I need only this one.
Newsvendor: Well, you know, you only need one leg to get around on if that's all you got. But it sure helps having two, now, doesn't it?
Luisa: Oh, well, uh, yes. This one too.
Newsvendor: How about some magazines?
i saw "i was a zombie for the fbi". side note about the director. marius penzcer was one the main tv consultants for the 96 clinton campaign. if i remember correctly he produced most of his tv spots.

Sad thing is that probably is the best movie made here. It is pretty good. That Jerry Lee movie was a real POS.
AtlantaDave Wrote:No one has mentioned the strangest of them all. "Mystery Train".
Good movie.
Well I'm a bit partial to the Elvis made for tv series that was filmed in 1989-90. I was in that one. Boy was that fun! As a matter of fact, they put my dancin', screamin' self in the opening credits. Way cool!! 04-rock
21 Grams was great.
As soon as I saw this topic "Mystery Train" came to mind (my user name was insprired by the scene with the hotel desk clerk telling the bellboy he needed to go to Lansky's and get him some clothes like he wore). Liked the Joe Strummer portion the best.

"Making the Grade" also represented the city well. Isn't Beverly Hall one of the buildings used?
my nephew is in that one.... 04-rock
Wasn't Mystery Train supposed to be at the Arcade Hotel right at the Arcade Restaurant near the train station downtown. That was a really cool movie. The Joe Strummer part was the best. I just thought the way the stories all intertwined was really neat.
Mystery Train...definitely Mystery Train. 04-bow
People vs. Larry Flint...not my fav movie, but I got to hang out and play bball with Woody H.
