we are talking about how the bowl stacks up now, to the current situation (sorry wasn't clear, and used the wrong word - "never" - should have said, "the $ec is not invlved with the LB currently, and has not been involved for many years"). would the change to 6th-7th place $ec from the CUSA champ be good/bad for the bowl?
let me ask you this, the last 2 times you were there (in the LB), what were the affiliations with the $ec? were you the conf. champ (obviously, no), 2nd place? 3rd? 4th? 5th? - i mean, you played Air Force, so it must have been at least 5th place, right?
the only connection we have had to the LB is that we are a part of CUSA, and the Conf Champ goes to the LB.
do you really think ole mrs will sell out the LB year after year (b/c you might find yourselves there).

Could the SEC vs Anyother BCS Conference sell out the Liberty Bowl. I'd bet my left nut!
now lets look at attendance averages for years when the $ec played:
there have been 19 years when the $ec has been involved with the LB.
the average attend=45,655. that's 5k less right there.
now lets look at ole mrs LB attend=48,136 (4 appearances)
and utk LB attend=49,350 (3 appearances)
bama (4 games) = 48278
ms state (twice) = 34903
lsu (twice) = 46625
georgia (twice) = 44147
ark (3 games) = 49610
auburn (twice) = 44393
s carolina (once) = 32,210
so the CUSA alignment, with conf champ draws about 5k more people than the $ec. i wonder what picks those were, from the $ec, the years y'all played? in only its second year, the attend was better than the $ec average for the bowl. and has increased yearly to around 56000, as it stands now.
shove your $ec overratedness in your piehole and chew on it.
the numbers say that the attendance for CUSA champ is better than any $ec bottomfeeder.

Just to add to what bjmcvay posted; I've worked for the Bowl for several of the last years and some of you have no idea what you're talking about (or are just mislead). First, the Bowl Game's capacity is closer to less than 60,000 (say 59,500 or so) b/c of the closed sections in the endzones for extra advertising space, thus throwing off capacity % attendance figures. Next, the LB has never (well at least for the last 4 years I've worked) released actual ticket sales numbers b/c of the want to still create a demand for the game. The LB sold out two games over the last four years and yet released actual attendance over sold to show improvement, not a climax. Other Bowls practice similar operations to keep a demand in their market. Having C-USA has been good b/c it tapped into the local market (conference affiliate of U of M, largest single ticket purchasing base of the Bowl) and gave that percentage of patrons a hope...b/c Bowl Game tickets are purchased in advance of game (with exception of participating school allocations, rougly totalling 25-30k). I'm not saying that the SEC didn't pull good crowds b/c they did, but the alignment with Liberty Bowl Alliance and then C-USA opened the doors into the market and create new avenues for more sponsorships and partnerships...local university ties usually strengthen local business ties, which can equate to sponsorships (which majority of LB's are local). Just a little FYI.

Your facts are correct, though skewed.
The following two numbers represent probably the largest crowds ever since they built the physical bowl (not including the Rolling Stones and Billy Graham).
60,128 - Ole Miss in 1989
61,497 - MS State in 1991
Both of those games were versus Air Force... I'm sure there were ten's of thousands of Air Force and Memphis fans there that day...
While the Liberty Bowl has been doing great while associating itself with the C-USA, you shouldn't expect them to give you affiliation just because the d@mn thing is your home field! Its a business for God's sake!
Please! Someone do a little brainstorming and let me know a list of other cities with Div. I-A programs and bowl games. Also list the bowl affiliations. Lets see what the norm is.

that's RIGHT, it IS a business, and more money will be made for the bowl, with a choice v champ, or CUSA v $ec matchup. the bowl doesn't get a portion of the hotel sales, or bar tab increases, or any of that. they get the ticket sales, and the sponsorships, and the tv time. that's where they're money is made. their business is to:
1.) fill the satdium so it looks good on tv.
2.) choose a game that will capture decent tv ratings.
nobody in this area will purchase a ticket for a 6-7th $ec v BE matchup, except for a few $ec fans of the crappy team that's playing, and the few BE fans that will travel here in late december.
conversly, there are a TON of football fans, who also happen to be memphis fans, that would be WAY more likely to attend the game if there is a CUSA team in the mix. with the Heisman attention that DeAngelo is getting, that boosts aur tv ratings (assuming all goes well). The BE is getting more pub as well, with all the realignment.
nobody expects the LB to just take the Tigers every year, no matter what. nobody.
but, if memphis were to EARN a legit spot at the bowl, play well, and win. the following years, area fans will be even MORE likely to purchase a ticket for a different CUSA team.
we don't want your scrubs.
Memphis, and rest of CUSA are better than $ec scrubs.

As for your statement about how the bowl does not receive more money from "a portion of the hotel sales, or bar tab increases, or any of that." Please to not be confused. While they don't get a direct cut, it is a huge determining factor in how they choose.
"2.) choose a game that will capture decent tv ratings."
Nobody shoots for decent...
By the way... its not natural to go watch another team play in a bowl game, even if they are in the same conference. Thats what TV is for.

You put too much emphasis on the need for locals to be there. SEC schools travel, and they travel well. Even 6th and 7 th place SEC teams. The ones that do not travel as heavily as the others (i.e Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, MS State) are close enough that their fanbase would happily come.
It would be my hope that no one that wasn't a fan of either school could even get a ticket once the "real" fans had bought them up.

the numbers call your bluff. historically (in the last 12 years), the LB has done better with champs vs champs than with $ec teams. and they were better $ec teams than what is proposed for the "new" $ec alignment. i call BS.
the LB is better off without the $ec bottomfeeders.

Yeah, I think they're right Rebs, I mean, you can just imagine a Liberty Bowl featuring, Rice, Tulsa, UTEP (man I hope they travel like Florida), SMU, Central Florida, East CArolina.....etc. ESPN would be caught in a bidding war just to air the damned thing.
People, even a bad SEC school is bigger and better than most CUSA schools. We travel better, are in a better location, have larger fanbases, and are actually heard of outside of our own cities. The Liberty Bowl will be SEC affiliated, bank on it.
