Let me preface by saying that I grew up in Minnesota (24 years) and live in Florida (13 years). Both are pretty far from Memphis.
There are so many dumb (to me) potshots taken at Mississippi (Oxford) on this board. Why?
I'm not aware of anything bad about the place. In fact, I'm told that no school has better looking female students. And there's nothing more important in life than being a pretty girl.
Is it:
* They are in a real conference and Memphis isn't (jealousy)
* They are your closest geographic rival (proximity)
* Memphis will never have the FB program Tennessee does (reality), so picking on the downtrodden makes us feel better
* Their on-field and on-court success (impossibility)
* That school has higher academic standards (more jealousy)
* Supporters of the Memphis Tigers aren't very sophistocated (juvenility)
* or something else?
Minnesota has friendly rivalries with Iowa and Wisconsin in FB. UMD, NoDak, and Wisconsin in hockey. We are SUPPOSED to have a storied rivalry with Michigan (Little Brown Jug), but haven't beaten them since '86 so it really doesn't work. I never see many pointless attacks targeting these "rivals".
Florida and Florida State supporters get into it often, but an outsider has to laugh because the two football programs just give the others so much material. Free Shoes U, Saint Bobby, Steve Superior, Zookgate, etc... They aren't personal attacks, just pokes at the lunacy that is big time college football. These two schools epitomize it.
Please help me understand why adults would make fun of oppposing coaches that are new on the job at a perennial losing school. I'm missing a lot here.
Thanks in advance.
Well, first question is...
Why do you care????
And the first answer that comes to my head is...
OLE MISS SUCKS!
I am very happy to hear that you think that the MInnesota/North Dakota hockey rivalry is polite and superior to ours. I am also of the impression that during your 13 year stay in Florida the Florida/Miami/FSU rivalries were always cordial and friendly.
Oh how I hope that some day we can reach your level of maturity.
One more question. Have you ever visited a Mississippi board? Looks like your last post was badmouthing UCF. But I am sure you don't have an agenda.

Oh, what a grand piece of wisdom that is. Your
wisdom and assessments are pure and simple garbage.
I can guarantee you that few Memphis fans/supporters are jealous of old mrs.
To say we'll never say the success of another program is short sighted and stupid. Three years ago people were saying Memphis would NEVER make a bowl game much less 2 straight years. There enlies the problem for the $ec fans. Memphis developing a good football program the right way which worries those schools especially locally. Yep, I'm saying there is a fear factor involved.
Memphis has higher admission standards than both schools ewe tea and old mrs. I know I just enrolled a freshman at Memphis.
If you think the rank and file Memphis fans are less sophiscated that old mrs and ewe tea fans then you haven't paying attention. Trailer parks everywhere are filled with bumper stickers showing those alliances.
They make fun of new coaches when they come in and make silly statements. A coach talking smack is one thing, but do something before you start running your big mouth. Especially when speaking about a football team that has beaten your school 2 straight years and the last 8 games of the series is even.

CMT:
I don't, just curious.
Why do they suck? I think you failed to answer.
"Badmouthing UCF" - when? I only pointed out the reality. UCF supporters are wannabes. They should be worried about winning a MAC or C-USA title and instead we hear about getting to the level of Florida or Florida State. I would LOVE to go to UCF games. (Full disclosure, I was a Rage season ticket holder. I'm looking for anything to do.) But the UCF marketing department has continually spit on my cupcake and called it frosting. No thanks, I'll continue to not follow college football.
Why would anyone visit an Old Miss board? There is no agenda. I will follow Tiger basketball as long as a local player is there. This site - for some reason - does not break out the FB and BB message boards. I have to read a lot of stuff to find the threads about basketball. Much of it doesn't make sense.
As for reaching the level of civility found in the Midwest, is that a goal? It really isn't difficult if you try. FWIW, Michigan and Ohio State supporters often get pretty dumb during the week of their football match.
Mr. AyatollahofRockNRolla,
Le me say, since you are not a fan of Memphis Athletics, thank you for visiting our board and I would be gald to answer you questions.
The potshots that are so dumb (to you) are taken in retaliation to countless attacks on OUR website regarding our team. They refer to the Memphis Tigers as "Tiger High", "Tigahs", etc, etc...in an effort to ridicule us.
The real question is why do you care?
Is it:
*You are a flamer from Ole Miss/ Ewe T in disguise (sneaky)
*You have no job and live in your parent's basement (leechy)
*You have a small unit and can't get laid (spanky)
*You're from the North and moved to the South (carpetbaggy)
*All your rivalries are 'civilized' (limp-wristy)
Now, feel free to go flame on another board and take your desires and aspirations for all fans to engage in a group HUG with you.

AyatollahofRockNRolla Wrote:As for reaching the level of civility found in the Midwest, is that a goal? It really isn't difficult if you try. FWIW, Michigan and Ohio State supporters often get pretty dumb during the week of their football match.
Try every week.
Being a Darius Washington fan is a great thing to be, whether he came to Memphis or not.
Darius has proven his ability at the college level and will no doubt be a valuable professional.
What are you so hung up about. Ole Miss Sucks, that is a fact and a very good reason. As for who started this rivalry, it wasn't me, but I have fun continuing it.
Jumping in the middle of an Ole Miss/Memphis rivalry and expecting anything less than what you already have gotten would be like jumping in a cage of starving lions an not expecting to get bit. And you aren't Daniel.
JT:
I haven't shared any wisdom. Merely asked a question. I'll have to telegraph my wisdom-sharing for you. It won't come until basketball tips off. FWIW, I think Memphis fans have a right to be VERY optimisitic about that. I digress.
Okay, you at least answered the question. Not jealousy. As for the success of Tennessee... am I being short-sighted? I don't see other schools breaking through. Fresno, TCU, Utah, Boise, Miami - these are just the "mid-Major" du jour. Virginia Tech and Florida State are the last schools to make the jump from secondary program to top tier. Are you suggesting THAT'S where Memphis is? I guess I'd need to see a lot more to be convinced the success is sustainable.
There enlies? You may mean "therein lies". And I did not know that SEC schools like Florida, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi, and Tennessee were worried about Memphis. My understanding is that schools like Fresno would build programs a DIFFERENT way with lesser recruited players (Carr, Smith) and JuCo guys to reach the same on-field level of competitiveness. Is Memphis getting top recruits like Tennessee? I didn't know.
I have no idea what admission standards are for any of these schools. That's why I asked. I know that no public school in the Southeast is "known" for academics. As a product of a state school, I'm well aware that you get out of it what you put in, so spare me the "Memphis has a great _____ program" spiel. It is not a hard school to get into and neither are the others now that you've clarified things. (Virginia, Michigan, Berkeley - to a non-athlete - are the top public schools in my eyes if you need a reference point.)
Great to hear that trailer parks throughout the South display loyalty for Tennessee and Mississippi. That doens't surprise me.
FINALLY, at the very end, I think you hit on the point I was looking for. Or at least one of them. I've never said Memphis would never make a bowl game and don't know of anyone else who did either. (Gee, only need to win 6 games to go to a bowl... I'd question anyone saying any school couldn't make a bowl game eventually.) I was not aware that the Mississippi coach ran his mouth about anything. I also was not aware that Mississippi lost to Memphis in football. (I really don't care.) But it is precisely these things that are touching off all the hostility?
So am I correct in assuming that there wasn't much between the schools before this coach was hired?
Thanks.
You need to look at more information before you start making such statements.
Another piece of information. Memphis raised nearly $5 million in its athletic scholarship funds this year. NO other non-BCS school produces like that. It also has the support of large corporations (see other threads) something few schools have that are not already BCS schools. Those little facts (not assessments) are what seperates it from the programs you mentioned. Again, do your homework before spouting off.
Learn something....University of Memphis about the school.
Oh, and it's harder to get into Tulane than it is to get 11 of 12 $ec schools.

Why do I care? Just curious. This site has SO MUCH stuff directed at Mississippi that I can't avoid it when looking for basketball tidbits. I'm just hoping to gain an understanding.
Not a flamer from anywhere. It doesn't really make sense to go online and do that. I am from the N and moved to the S, although Orlando is really south of "the South".
AyatollahofRockNRolla Wrote:So am I correct in assuming that there wasn't much between the schools before this coach was hired?
Thanks.
Not correct. The series goes way back to when Memphis State was a little pup and Ole Miss scheduled them to open every year and get a win. They were "doing us a favor".
The two teams have played over 40 games. This is one of U of Memphis's oldest rivalries. Just in the last 10 - 15 years have the teams been somewhat competitive to each other.
Most of the smack and talk is a result of the arrogance of SEC fans toward the U of Memphis. They like to look down their noses at us, and have for years.
Mapper:
Awesome! That helps a lot. Great explanation.
JT:
No kidding I need more information. I don't know much about Old Miss (not very competitive in college sports) and Memphis (beyond basketball).
AyatollahofRockNRolla Wrote:I did not know that SEC schools like Florida, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi, and Tennessee were worried about Memphis.
Recruiting, my friend, recruiting.
With the famous Hammer-drop laid on Bama by the NCAA, money is MUCH less a factor in the recruiting hotbed of Shelby county Tennessee.
The majority of the top recruits in this state graduate high school in or near the City of Memphis. Fact.
That's for football as well as basketball.
Quote:My understanding is that schools like Fresno would build programs a DIFFERENT way with lesser recruited players (Carr, Smith) and JuCo guys to reach the same on-field level of competitiveness. Is Memphis getting top recruits like Tennessee? I didn't know.
We're competing head to head with the SEC schools for those recruits here in Memphis.
And before you discard the notion of our local recruits being that much of an impact, remember that a few were key players on the teams leading up to and including the U of Alabama's last NC team as well as being HIGHLY sought after by the likes of UT, Ole Miss, and Arkansas, as well.
Until recently, we had no shot at many of these recruits.
Now, thanks to Tommy West and some big wins on NATIONAL TV, we have a very GOOD chance of landing these recruits.
Quote:I have no idea what admission standards are for any of these schools. That's why I asked.
no, you STATED this as fact when asking if we were jealous...
Quote:* That school has higher academic standards (more jealousy)
Here's a tip... don't expound on your own ignorance, as it makes you look stupid.
Quote:I know that no public school in the Southeast is "known" for academics.
The University of Memphis is.
Quote:As a product of a state school, I'm well aware that you get out of it what you put in, so spare me the "Memphis has a great _____ program" spiel.
Then what, praytell, do you propose we use to define the academic excellence of a University?
Quote:Great to hear that trailer parks throughout the South display loyalty for Tennessee and Mississippi. That doens't surprise me.
As it shouldn't.
Quote:I've never said Memphis would never make a bowl game and don't know of anyone else who did either. (Gee, only need to win 6 games to go to a bowl... I'd question anyone saying any school couldn't make a bowl game eventually.) I was not aware that the Mississippi coach ran his mouth about anything. I also was not aware that Mississippi lost to Memphis in football.
Because you live in Orlando.
Once again, don't express factual statements for things of which you are ignorant.
Quote:So am I correct in assuming that there wasn't much between the schools before this coach was hired?
Thanks.
No.
In fact the storied history of Memphis v. Ole Miss is long and filled with a combination of heartaches for Memphis fans and gloating by Ole Miss fans, who continue to gloat today.
Another FACT... Ogeron went on LOCAL radio claiming that Ole Misss would NEVER lose to Memphis again.
Want more?
The ****** also claimed he would "build a fence" around Memphis, to corral every good player from this area... Fact.
He then claims he wants to drop the series with us for a more respectable series with (I believe) Tulane or Louissianna Lafayette, maybe LATech(?)
Must be his plan for never losing to us again and a cornerpost of his "fence."
- this way he won't be recruiting against a school that every local kid sees give him a perennial asswhipping.
When those ignorant trash realize their place in the world of collegiate athletics, and stop spouting off about their supposed greatness, many Memphis fans will cut them some slack.
Until then... Go To Hell ole miss.

New to Memphis-
I was speculating about reasons. Did you miss that? I never said anything about Memphis or other schools' admissions.
For the record, I consider the following to have a good academic reputation.
*Rice
*Chicago
*Northwestern
*Vanderbilt (probably the only "good" large school in the Southeast
*all Ivy Leagues, although Cornell seems a step down
*Michigan, Virginia, Berkeley (which all offer a side-door for athletes)
*Patriot League schools
*Cal Tech
I graduated from public school (Minnesota) and am well aware that each state university has pockets of strength. Heck, UCF and UNLV are world leaders in Hospitality.
Nobel prize winners. Six figure salaries for graduates. Research institutions. Respected degrees. Sorry, the Southeast (where I earned my graduate degree because I COULDN'T GET INTO the MBA programs at UNC, Duke, Berkeley, or the Anderson School at UCLA) doesn't have a reputation for academics when compared to the best schools in America.

Selective reasoning as in "we've got history on our side" as your argument in football. Then when it comes to basketball then it's "we won the last game, that's all that matters." Now when you can admit that you are an inferior basketball program, I'll be impressed with you. Other than that, you just plain full of $4I7.

You've described a bifurcated America with North and South. What about New England, the Pacific Northwest, etc...? Maybe I mean "the deep South".
Florida? Isn't that just another school like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, or Ohio State? (Yes.)
Wake? Yes, a decent school. Also tiny. Not in the league of Penn, Columbia, Stanford, or Rice.
Duke? A very good school. Ditto Vandy, which I mentioned.
Georgia Tech? Please. It isn't MIT or Cal Tech. This is GEORGIA Tech, one of the good public schools in America but not the elite - or even close to it - in its field.
Are you saying Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina have schools among the nation's finest? Please. It isn't open for debate. Check any list of top undergraduate institutions or top Medical, Business, or Physics programs and they tend to be in the Northeast.
Believe me, as a graduate of the best MBA program within 700 miles I WISH the Southeast United States were known for education. It isn't.

Guys, thanks for mentioning the recent US NEWS & WORLD REPORT rankings. Let's review my comment.
"I know that no public school in the Southeast is "known" for academics."
Now let's define Southeast and look at the rankings. To me, the Mason-Dixon line separates North from South. I'm less concerned about that than I am about smaller geographic regions. New England, Delmarva, the Midwest, Great Plains, Pacific Northwest, etc... Even so, lumping Virginia (which does NOT play in the SEC) in with the Southeast doesn't change things much.
BEST NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES:
1. Harvard and Princeton
3. Yale
4. Penn
5. Duke and Stanford
7. Cal Tech and MIT
9. Columbia and Dartmouth
11. Wash U (the one in St. Louis)
12. Northwestern
13. Cornell and Johns Hopkins
15. Brown and Chicago
17. Rice
18. Notre Dame and VANDERBILT
20. EMORY and Berkeley
No matter the boundary, there are very few in the "Southeast" that garner elite status. Emory is in Atlanta and qualifies. Vandy in Tennessee is fine in my book. Duke? I don't consider NC to be SE, but fine if you do.
For the record, the three schools in question...
85t. Tennessee (tied with Auburn)
3rd Tier. Mississippi (along with Montana and New Mexico)
4th Tier. Memphis (beside UNLV and E. Tenn. St.)
Best "Public National" Universities?
1. Berkeley
2. Virginia
3. UCLA and Michigan
5. UNC
6. William & Mary
7. UCSD
8. Wisconsin
9. Georgia Tech
10. UC-Irvine
11. Illinois
12. UCSB and Washington
14. Penn St. and UC-Davis
16. Florida
17. Texas
18. Maryland
19. Georgia and Pittsburgh
Lest one say that the category "misses" the good schools in the Southeast...

The only Memphis game I saw last year was the thrilla in Tampa where Almamy had to go 10 for 10 from the line to ice the Tiger win. This year I plan on making it to a game in Memphis and my mother is hoping to get there from Minnesota.
VERY anxious for basketball to start with Dorsey, Carney, Weeki Waki, and Darius all back. Exciting newcomers round out a very deep team. #35 honestly got two years experience at PG and the whole team seemed to mesh by season's end.

You obviously haven't been on Vanderbilt's campus to see their hotties. They make mississippi girls look like trailer trash ready for a Jerry Springer episode.
I'm a Miss. State fan pulling for you next Monday. I believe you will beat the rebels 24-21 or something like that. Lots of turnovers but Mphs holds on for their 3rd straight win.
I can see you don't know much about the U. Miss. If you did, you would understand much more than you do now.
