JACKSON - All that's separating Martha Dunagin Saunders from her seat in the University of Southern Mississippi's Administration Building is a day-long on-campus interview next week.
The state College Board on Tuesday named Saunders, 58, current chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, its "preferred candidate" for the ninth Southern Miss presidency at a press conference following closed meetings.
A Hattiesburg native and Southern Miss alumna, Saunders is expected to undergo a series of open interviews with a range of university constituencies April 5.
